Security Information for Staying in Guatemala City

Recommended Areas: Zone 9 and Zone 10

Zone 9 and Zone 10 are among the safest and most developed areas in Guatemala City, known for their hotels, restaurants, and commercial centers. These zones have a strong security presence, especially around hotels and business districts, making them the best choice for visitors.

Key security considerations for Zone 9 & 10:

  • Hotels in these zones typically have 24/7 security, controlled access, and surveillance systems.
  • Walking is generally safe during daylight hours, especially in well-trafficked areas. However, it’s best to use a hotel taxi or rideshare service (Uber or InDrive) at night.
  • Many businesses, restaurants, and shopping centers have private security personnel

Staying in Zone 1 and Other Areas

Zone 1 is the historic center of Guatemala City and home to government buildings, cultural landmarks, and markets. While it offers affordable accommodations and a rich cultural experience, it is not as secure as Zone 9 or 10, especially at night.

Key security considerations for Zone 1 and other areas:

  • Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and bag-snatching, is more common in tourist areas and crowded spaces.
  • Walking alone at night is not recommended. It is best to take a taxi or rideshare service.
  • Some hotels may not have the same level of security as those in Zone 9 and 10.

Other zones, such as Zone 11, Zone 13 (near the airport), and Zone 15, also offer safe lodging options, but they require longer commutes and can be affected by heavy traffic.

Final Recommendation on Where to Stay

For safety, convenience, and ease of access to the conference, we strongly recommend staying at the Barceló Hotel or within Zone 9 or 10. These areas provide the best combination of security, accessibility, and proximity to conference activities. If staying elsewhere, carefully consider transportation options, security measures, and travel time to the conference venue.
